Summer Update from the Outreach Coordinating Team

Greetings … we hope everyone is enjoying a relaxing summer break!

Since Life & Work is currently on hiatus, we thought we would send this email to update you on a number of activities that are happening over the next month or two.

1.       July 14th – Community BBQ at ‘The Haven’

All are welcome to attend a Community BBQ to be held at MHI’s housing community ‘The Haven’ this coming Sunday, July 14th from 2:30pm to 5:30pm. ‘The Haven’ is located at 435 Via Verona, near the Longfields Transit Station.  MHI is also looking for volunteers to help with barbecuing and donations of finger foods for the BBQ. Please contact Nancy Hazen at 613-825-1621 for further information.

2.       Free Shop Day at ‘The Haven’

A “Free Shop Day” is being planned for the residents of ‘The Haven’ on Wednesday, August 7th. Donations of gently used clothing for men, ladies, or children (think Back to School!) and household items in good condition are being gratefully accepted anytime between now and August 5th to support this event. If you have something you wish to donate, please contact Mara at mara7690@gmail.com to arrange a drop off time.

3.       September 8th – Steepleview Crossing BBQ after church

As part of our 40th anniversary events, a BBQ lunch for residents of Steepleview Crossing (the housing community next door to the church) and the BUC congregation will be held on Sunday September 8th after church.  This will be an opportunity for members of BUC to get to know our neighbours who we may see from time to time in the parking lot or walking by the church.

Planning for the BBQ will happen over the summer. We will need a number of volunteers to do the barbequing, prepare the hamburgers and hotdogs, help with serving the food, set up tables and help with other tasks as they come up.  Please let Liz Nieman (liz.nieman@sympatico.ca) or Nancy Hazen (nhazen46@gmail.com) know if you would like to help us with this special event – including joining us on the planning team.

4.       September 21st & 22nd – Learning Event being hosted by Bells Corners United Church

Bells Corners United Church is hosting a learning event on the weekend of September 21st and 22nd entitled “From Charity to Social Action: Working together to create a just society”. For more details please refer to the poster and brochure attached to this email. Note that a group rate is available for five or more registrants. If you are interested in attending this event, please contact Trish Barlow at patriciabarlow@rogers.com before Monday July 29th so that we can arrange to obtain this group rate if possible.
